In Japan traditional etiquette and manners are important in every aspect of life, whether you are meeting people, dining out, or participating in a business meeting. When Japanese etiquette is executed correctly, a very favorable impression is created. At Kitahama Salon, under the expert tutelage of Ms. Hiroko Ishida, we not only teach you how to behave in a variety of social situations, we also provide the reasons and background for the etiquette.

Ishida-sensei was born in Kyoto and attended high school in New York and Japan. After majoring in Cross Cultural Communication at a women’s university in Kyoto she worked at an export trading company for 16 years. Her parents regularly held Japanese tea ceremonies in their salon in Shiga so Ishida sensei has been able to study and perform the Japanese tea ceremony and Chaji (茶事) for many years. Ishida-sensei has also gained instructor certification in a number of areas of etiquette, such as Hotel Service, Kaiseki Table Manners, French Dining Cuisine and Manners, Japanese Manners & Protocol.

Ishida-sensei’s teaching method is both instructional and experiential. She teaches her students the fundamental basis of Japanese thought, the historical context that goes with it, and how it can be applied to both specific situations and a variety of everyday settings. Students are also able to experience these situations at Kitahama Salon under the kind guidance of Ishida-sensei.
